FRESNO - The Fresno State women's golf team finished what it started Tuesday at San Joaquin Country Club, capping a three-round sweep of the Fresno State Classic to win its second consecutive home tournament dating back to March 2014.

The team completed the day with their lowest score of the season, 883 (297, 296, 290) shooting +19 for the win. Santa Clara was the team runner-up 21 strokes back (+40, 904), followed by CSU-Northridge (+54, 918), Sacramento State (+68, 932) and Santa Clara B (+82, 946).

FRESNO - The Bulldog defense forced two key fourth-quarter turnovers and Fresno State held San Diego State to 270 yards in its 24-13 victory on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.


Decked in its new navy uniforms and with former FSU Quarterback Derek Carr making a return visit, the Bulldogs (3-3, 2-0 Mountain West) have now won three-straight games after dropping their first three. Fresno State has an early leg-up in the West Division standings, beating SDSU (2-3, 1-1 MW) for the third-straight season under head coach Tim DeRuyter.

FRESNO - On the day prior to teeing off the first annual Nick Watney Invitational, the 10-year PGA professional appeared at the tournament’s practice round and banquet Sunday at Sunnyside Country Club to greet this week’s participants. For his former team, the ex-Bulldog played nine holes with the Fresno State men’s and women’s golf teams on Saturday and shared collegiate stories and advice on how to be a better golfer.


“I really enjoy coming back here,” said Watney. “I have a lot of great friends and family [in Fresno], and yesterday I had a blast with the team. I was getting a bit nostalgic out there; I can’t believe it’s been over 10 years since I finished school.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Fresno State football team opened up Mountain West play with a come-from-behind victory over New Mexico at University Stadium, coming back from 10-down in the first half to win 35-24 Friday night on ESPN2.


The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0 MW) overcame two turnovers and the first-half hole with a strong second-half showing from the defense and an offense that scored on 4-of-5 drives from the end of the second quarter to the beginning of the fourth.

FRESNO - Fresno State record-setting quarterback and current starting quarterback of the Oakland Raiders Derek Carr will be making a return to Bulldog Stadium next Friday, Oct. 3, to serve as the honorary captain for the Mountain West league game between the `Dogs and San Diego State.


Carr was a second-round draft pick of the Raiders last spring and is completing 63 percent of his passes with three touchdowns in three games for the Raiders so far this season. Oakland plays Miami on Sept. 28 in England and has a bye weekend after that, allowing Carr the opportunity to return for Fresno State to honor him.
