FSO Civil Unit to Assist with Homeless Encampment Cleanup Print E-mail

FRESNO - On Monday, March 6th, deputies with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Civil Unit will assist Fresno County Public Works and Environmental Health with a homeless encampment cleanup operation. It will occur on two pieces of property located near the intersection of W. Dennett Ave. and N. Lafayette Ave. in Fresno.

The encampment has been growing during the last year and the Sheriff’s Office has received many complaints from local residents and the property owner. There are approximately a dozen people illegally occupying the properties at any given time.

Two Arrested for Armed Robbery Print E-mail

FRESNO - Early Monday morning Southwest District Midnight Officer John Swanson of the Fresno Police Deaprtment responded to a call of a robbery at the Sands Motel, 1441 N. Golden State. The victim had gone to the Motel with a female and upon entering the room a male exited the bathroom with an AK47 style rifle, demanding his money, taking $300 in cash. Once he did this the victim was allowed to leave, whereupon he contacted the Fresno Police Department, advising of the weapon seen.

Officers arrived and utilizing precautionary measures, surrounded the motel room and called out the potential suspects, detaining them without incident. The victim was able to provide officers with descriptive detail of the weapon and suspects that led to the arrest of the suspects.

NASA Telescope Reveals Largest Batch of Earth-Size, Habitable-Zone Planets Around Single Star Print E-mail

WASHINGTON DC -  NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

The discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water – key to life as we know it – under the right atmospheric conditions, but the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.

McDonalds Employee Stabbed By Transient Print E-mail

FRESNO - A little after noon on Friday Southeast patrol officers from the Fresno Police Department were dispatched to McDonalds, 4505 East Kings Canyon Road, regarding a transient that stabbed an employee. Upon arrival, officers contacted an 18 year old female, an employee of McDonalds, suffering from a single stab wound to her lower back. The victim was rushed to CRMC where she is in fair condition.

The victim and witnesses conveyed that the victim walked out the east door of the building to deliver food to a customer parked in the lot. The suspect was standing nearby but no words were exchanged between the suspect and victim. As the victim approached the door, the transient went up to her and stabbed her one time in the back with an unknown sharp instrument.

Madera Unified Superintendent FIRED In Unanimous Vote Print E-mail

MADERA - As reported by Big Valley News last week, the Madera Unified School District Board of Trustees has fired Superintendent Ed Gonzales without cause. At their closed session meeting last night the board decided to terminate their contract with the superintendent with a unanimous vote.

It was standing room only for supports of the embattled superintendent with many forced to watched the evenings proceedings from a make-shift "Drive-in" theater in the parking lot. Supporters wore hand-written signs on their chests calling Gonzales "Super Ed".
