FRESNO - On Friday, March 10, 2017, at 4:26 am, patrol officers were dispatched to Blackstone and Shields Avenues regarding a vehicle that struck a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male laying on the roadway in the eastbound lanes of Shields Avenue just west of Blackstone Avenue.

The male was struck by a motorist and unfortunately was pronounced deceased shortly after EMS arrived on scene. The 25 year old male driver remained at the scene after the collision and was cooperative with the investigation.

The 25 year old male driver was driving a small SUV and was traveling eastbound on Shields Avenue approaching Blackstone Avenue at a moderate rate of speed. The pedestrian was standing in the roadway in front of the approaching vehicle and he was possibly crossing Shields Avenue from the southern side of the roadway.

The driver did not see the pedestrian in the roadway until it was too late and his vehicle struck the pedestrian knocking him to the roadway resulting in the fatal injuries.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this crash and there were no criminal violations committed on the part of the driver. Currently, the decedent has not been identified and once identified that notification will come from the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is conducting the accident investigation. Eastbound Shields Avenue, from Blackstone to Glenn Avenues, was closed from 4:40 am to 8:30 while CRU conducted the scene investigation.

In 2017 YTD, there have been 8 pedestrians killed in vehicle accidents and at the same time in 2016 there were 2 pedestrians killed in vehicle accidents.
